Michael Dawson Gallery,
in association with non-profit organization The Art of
Elysium, is proud to present a group show featuring three
exciting and unique views of Los Angeles in the photography
exhibit, “LA: People, Places, Shadows”. The exhibit
begins with an opening reception on Friday, December 6th,
7:00-10:00 pm and runs through January 18, 2003. Michael
Dawson Gallery is located at 535 N. Larchmont Blvd., Los
Angeles, 90004 (the gallery is housed within Dawson’s Book
Shop).
“LA: People, Places, Shadows” brings together three engaging
and diverse photographers, Darin Fenn, Michael
Joseph, and Robert Kawika Sheer, each focusing on
singular aspects of this vibrant metropolis. Darin Fenn points
his camera toward moments of light and humanity as they happen
in time, capturing a universal zest for life. Michael Joseph
brilliantly documents the physical and architectural form of
Los Angeles, seeing it as a beautiful dance of many shapes and
angles, exposing an abstract nature within structure. Robert
Kawika Sheer looks for what is not apparent to the naked eye;
with his long exposure nighttime photographs, he reveals a
surreal view of Los Angeles as he captures shadows in natural
surroundings. The entire show bristles with the fresh and
enthusiastic approach these talented artisans bring to our
seemingly well documented city.
The Art of Elysium is dedicated to bringing joy to terminally
ill children through music, theater and the fine arts.
Talented artists volunteer their skills at hospitals and other
local facilities, teaching and sharing their gifts with these
afflicted young people. In return, The Art of Elysium
showcases these artists to the community. A portion of all
sales from this show will benefit The Art of Elysium.
The gala opening will be a classy yet casual Friday night
affair, bringing out many friendly and familiar faces in the
photographic and entertainment communities (artists’
collectors include David and Courtney Arquette, Balthazar
Getty, Patricia Arquette, Jeremy Sisto and David Schwimmer).
The evening will be catered by Mastro’s Steakhouse and will
feature the musical styling of Rara Avis, playing original
acoustic-electronic fusion.
Michael Dawson Gallery, now in its third year, continues to
offer the finest in both contemporary and vintage
photography. The gallery represents contemporary
photographers such as Gary Leonard, Christopher Landis,
Kaucyila Brooke and Claudia Kunin. Notable vintage shows have
included Art Center Photography from the 40s and 50s, Man
Ray's Studio, and Images of the American West 1850-1900. With
LA: People, Places, Shadows, Michael Dawson Gallery further
explores the Southern California cultural experience.
“LA: People, Places, Shadows” is curated by Francis Della
Vecchia, business manager of Michael Dawson Gallery, and
longtime participant in the culture of Los Angeles as writer,
producer, and political candidate.
