Over the past two and a half years, London-based
label/production team of Paul Davis and Matt Jackson aka
Circulation have solidly managed to successfully lodge
themselves in the gap between the progressive house/trance and
techno/tech-house communities with their Pantone color-coded
releases spanning as many genres as hues.
Keeping each release on Circulation colour
coded and information free has given this label serious
mystique and built up a worldwide cult status for the duo with
their quality, genre-crossing house music with
such DJ savvy household names as Sasha and John Digweed plus
high profile progressive up-and-comers like Steve Lawler, Lee
Burridge, Craig Richards, and Danny Howells highlighting the
list of strong UK supporters.
Having met
in Paul’s Creative Sound record shop, one of London’s leading
independent record emporiums, Paul and Matt have since gone on
to release twenty + records on their own label in the last two
years (17 on Circulation and 6 as part of a limited series).
Their Limited series has allowed the pair to have the freedom
to experiment with different styles and have gathered support
from DJs who would not normally play the proper, more house
orientated, Circulation releases.
Showing
this kind of diversity, the duo has been everyone's hot tip
for 2000, having now delivered their debut album, which
consists of nine exclusive new tracks and the highlights from
their burgeoning colour coded back catalogue, spread over two
CD's.
Colours
is house music with no pretensions. You get that classic
dirty, twisted energy that dominated the early house blueprint
with enough jackin beats and Mr. Fingers-esque melodies to
keep you gripped in that Circulation way. Truly a sublime
debut album, Colours’ disc one is on a slightly
mellower tip with the beautifully classic sounding Cyan and
two versions of Green, the track that kick started the label
in all it's outstanding technicolour.
Disc two
has a slightly harder edge with the distinctive, techy style
that Davis and Jackson have made their own. With each track
effortlessly gliding into the next, this is certainly an album
that should be heard from start to finish.
