Los Angeles, CA - Yuri's Night:
The World Space Party is pleased to announced that this years
event is far outpacing last years inaugural event. With 90
events in 40 countries on 6 continents in the works for April
12, 2002, organizers have already surpassed the 2001 party
total.
Yuri's Night is held on April 12 as it is "Cosmonaut Day" in
Russia. It was on this day in 1961 that Yuri Gagarin made his
historic flight around the Earth, making him the first human
in space. This flight opened up the dream of space flight to
all people. Yuri's Night 2001 was the largest grassroots
celebration of space in history, with events in 64 cities in
29 countries on all 7 continents. An estimated 10,000
worldwide celebrants, from underground ravers to NASA rocket
scientists, joined to celebrate the anniversary of the first
human spaceflight by the Russian cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin. The
date also marked the 20th anniversary of the first Space
Shuttle flight. "Yuri's Night 2001 was a global outpouring of
our generation's passion and fascination with space," said
Loretta Hidalgo, one of the two young co-creators of Yuri's
Night. "We had so much fun last year that we just had to do it
again."
The flagship celebration of Yuri's Night 2002 will be in Los
Angeles, appropriately taking place at the Santa Monica Museum
of Flying, with major events also being planned in Moscow,
Paris, and Sydney. The parties will be interconnected by a
global webcast, climaxing with a midnight toast to Yuri and to
a peaceful future in space.
A space party may at first seem like a curious idea, George
Whitesides the event's co-creator explains, "Astronauts
orbiting Earth see no borders, no countries… just one planet,
one people. It is this perspective which we want to share with
the youth of the world as we celebrate our planet, our
future."
Last year, the individual Yuri's Night celebrations ranged
from a large dance party that attracted over 1500 people in
Los Angeles, to a symbolic toast at a research station at the
South Pole, to a picnic under the cherry blossoms in Japan.
The goal of Yuri's Night is to inspire young people around the
world to celebrate space. Through Yuri's Night, space becomes
the possession of not only governments and space agencies but
of the youth who will shape the future of space and therefore
the future of the world.
Proceeds from the Los Angeles party will go to Cosmos
Education, an annual project to send young space professionals
to southern Africa to discuss science, sustainability and
space in local schools. Last year they reached 4,000 young
African students. Funds will also be donated to support
Permission to Dream, a program to donate telescopes and build
mentorships for inner city kids in Los Angeles
"Yuri's Night is as much a movement as an event," said George
Whitesides, Yuri's Night Co-Creator. "It's an opportunity for
everyone around the world to show that space is a presence in
their lives, and maybe that they want to go too." On April 12,
the world will come together to celebrate regardless of
culture, creed or national agendas. The planet is going to
dance. For more information about Yuri's Night, and for tips
