Larry Tee,
the organizer of Electroclash™ 2001/2002 and head of Mogul
Electro Records, is the loudest champion of the Electroclash/nu-Electro
scene and this year is working to bring Electroclash 2003™
across America and Europe. Through his nightclub Luxx, in
Brooklyn, and his legendary parties like Club Badd,
Berliniamsburg and Electroclash Events, Larry has worked with
virtually everyone in this hugely popular emerging genre.
These groups include Fischerspooner, Peaches, Chicks on Speed,
Felix Da Housecat, W.I.T., Avenue D, Adult, DJ Hell, Tiga, Bis,
Ladytron, Arthur Baker, 2 many DJs, Spalding Rockwell and the
Detroit Grand Pubas, to name a few. But his story predates the
interest in the new Electro scene.
A native Atlantan, Larry Tee played in the band
that produced the B-52’s first single, ran a nightclub called
the Celebrity Club where 10,000 Maniacs, the Black Crows and
Butthole Surfers played, and DJed the original Electro music
of Kraftwerk, DAF, and Depeche Mode. While down south, he
hooked up with RuPaul, Lady Bunny, and a band of drag queens
that eventually all moved to NYC in 1989 to open Celebrity
Club at the Tunnel nightclub. From there he started the famous
Love Machine party, where the supermodels and movies stars
rubbed elbows with Sinead, Prince, Deee-lite and New Order.
During this time Larry wrote "Supermodel (You Better Work)"
for Rupaul. In 1992 he started Disco 2000 with Michael Alig
(Larry made the name up), and DJed Saturdays at the Roxy, The
Limelite, Twilo and the Palladium. It was during these five
years Larry became a raging drug addict and eventually got
clean through the help of Narcotics Anonymous. Getting clean
was the start of Electroclash for Larry.
After DJing house clubs for
over 10 years, Larry found it increasingly difficult to be
excited by the music. Looking around the underground record
shops he found early singles by Adult and Chicks on Speed and
then a friend took him to see Fischerspooner at Gavin Brown’s
Gallery. Excited by what he saw, he began to seek out other
artists that had a similar love for Electro music and he put
together a collection of 15 NYC artists. This led him to the
idea that a festival could bring attention to these artists he
felt strongly about. In October of 2001 Fischerspooner,
Peaches, Chicks on Speed, Adult, Detroit Grand Pubas, W.I.T.,
A.R.E. Weapons, Ladytron DJ Team, DJ Assault, Crossover and
Soviet came together for an event that got the whole world
talking about the music. The original Electroclash™
compilation of artists that Larry Tee put together came out in
2001 on Mogul Electro and has gone on to be an important
document of the festival and of the movement. A second
release, entitled Badd Inc., is a compilation of the
hard-to-find outrageous tracks that have made his nightclub,
Berliniamsburg so special. The much-anticipated album by the
international girl group sensation, W.I.T., becomes available
in the U.S. in March.
Starting with the Electroclash
2002 event in NYC, Larry Tee and W.I.T. embarked on a tour
across America with Peaches, Chicks on Speed, and Tracy and
the Plastics. Tee was the official tour deejay. The tour hit
Boston, Philly, Toronto, Montreal, Columbus, Minneapolis,
Chicago, Detroit, Vancouver, Seattle, Portland, LA, SF, Fort
Worth, and Miami. W.I.T. and DJ Larry Tee then headed to
Europe for a 3-week UK tour (in London playing Trash, 93 east,
Sonic Mook, Nag Nag Nag, and a short detour to Manchester and
Dublin), and performing in Barcelona, Madrid, Berlin, Cologne,
Amsterdam, and Zurich. Now the international media has
exploded with interest in the Electroclash phenomena. W.I.T.
has been featured with 5 pages in the Face, 3 pages in I-d, 2
pages in Spin, a feature in Sleazenation, NME, and covers of
Billboard, Fader, BPM, Loop, and on the new “80s vs. Electro”
CD on Ultra. Features on Larry Tee have appeared in GQ, Spin,
Rolling Stone, Sleazenation, The Face, Surface, and many
others. Last year the term Electroclash couldn’t be traced
with an Internet search and now there are too many to load.
