Los Angeles – Avant-Guard art scene performance troupe The Mutaytor have announced new spring dates in Southern
California including appearances at Pierce College on May 23rd,
the Venice Carnivale on June 14th and the West
Hollywood Pride Festival on June 21st and 22nd.
They were also the only performers with a stage built
entirely for them at the world renown Coachella Valley Music
and Arts Festival. This was their second year at Coachella.
The Mutaytor features over 50 thundering drums,
pyrotechnics, aerial performers, hi-tech laser projections
and visuals, international break-beat science, dangerous
stunts and over 15 tribal performers. The Mutaytor's
electric stage show is like an auditory psychedelic assault
that invades your body then overtakes you into a frenzy of
blissful rhythms, tones and beats. Part Blue Man Group, part
Stomp with a dash of Cirque Du Soleil, The Mutaytor's visual
presentation is one-of-a-kind. Incorporating live swordplay,
tribal fire dancers, tesla coils and drums from 4
continents, The Mutaytor spans cultural and historical
timelines and beyond.
In 1996, The Mutaytor founder Matty Nash’s musical journey
was forever altered by his first trip to the Burning Man
Festival in Black Rock City, Nevada. Gaining inspiration
from the experience of tribal drummers, fire dancers, body
painters, and martial artists he returned to LA with a new
sense of purpose. Over the next two years, Matty built a
monstrous flame-throwing drum set and began to create tribal
oriented rhythms, with enough groove to get people to dance.
In 1998 he performed his first solo-drum show at Burning
Man. The crowd took on a life of it’s own, and without
prompting started dancing, stripping their clothing, playing
with fire, and otherwise expressing themselves creatively.
He termed this process of transforming his audience into
dancing fiends “mutayting” and thus, The Mutaytor was born.
For the first 2 years, The Mutaytor was a solo drum set act.
As the years progressed, Matty added more unique elements to
the Mutaytor’s show: live DJ’s, fire performers, a
flame-throwing drum kit with flaming drumsticks, performance
art, tribal dancers, aerial artists, martial arts, hoop
dancers, and dangerous stunts. Taking a page from Cirque du
Soleil, he created a highly visual and interactive stage
show that completely transforms every venue and audience. In
2000, The Mutaytor performed with tesla coil performance
artist Doctor Megavolt (Dr. Austin Richards). This legendary
concert placed Matty into a new realm of drumming history,
as he performed on his drum set inside of a steel cage which
was struck by 1.3 million volts of lightning courtesy of Dr. Megavolt’s tesla coil.
The first Mutaytor CD, Keepin’ It Surreal was
released independently in 2001 and featured Matty’s drum
music, as well as collaborations with DJ Satan on
electronics. It was a blend of the tribal drums meeting
electronic that have become staples of The Mutaytor sound.
In 2002, The Mutaytor started to break through the L.A.
underground rave scene into more mainstream audiences. They
headlined the City of West Hollywood’s Halloween Carnaval
and Parade to an audience of over 300,000 people. The
Mutaytor were also featured artists both days at the
Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival to an audience of
60,000. Under Matty’s direction, his group also began to use
their music and visual performance to promote health and
well-being by performing music therapy and education shows.
The group was honored to perform for 2500 deaf students at
Gallaudet University in Washington DC, UCLA’s World of
SacredMusic Festival, CSULA’s Summer Bridge Program, Special
Olympics Southern California, and many other civic and
school events. They released their critically acclaimed
second CD Island of Misfit Psience in July 2002.
The Mutaytor team just finished their new DVD, How To
Change Civilians into Rock Stars and their new CD
E:Ching – Mutayshuns Volume Four that are available as a
two disk set. The Mutaytor will also be featured in several
documentaries. The Mutaytor’s upcoming Southern California
dates follow, come and get Mutayted!
