Around 3 years ago, the California-based record
labels, Plug Research and Phthalo were getting demos from an
unknown Finnish producer who would randomly send email
messages to Plug Research always saying something about "did
you listen to my tape, because it's very cold here and I want
to release records." The producer was Vladislav Delay
who has since made an impression of mastery on the world of
techno, and has now been called "The New Godfather of Techno"
by a few insiders. And that statement, if you survey the
present landscape of Computer Music, is completely correct.
Since the Phthalo/Plug Research demos, and the original
release of his Sistol material by Phthalo, he has gone on to
release on Chain Reaction, Mille Plateaux, and Scape, and has
shown that dancefloor beatgrids are not a tyranny of static
rules, but instead a completely flexible and ever transforming
medium that is perfectly suited to absolute self-expression.
This "personalization of the dancefloor" is a rare
accomplishment, and Delay deserves credit for doing something,
which by many is considered impossible. Phthalo presents the
long awaited re-issue of some of Vladislav Delay's earliest
and most original work, Sistol.
