    LOS ANGELES, CA –  October 3, 2018 – Los Angeles Performance Practice presents its annual LAX Festival, which serves as a highly visible platform that supports hundreds of local artists each year, and reaches thousands of audience members in the greater Los Angeles area. The Los Angeles Exchange [LAX] Festival, 6th Ed. will run for ten days from Thursday, October 11 through Sunday, October 21, 2018 at participating venues around town. With performances and events that are geographically focused in and around Downtown L.A., the festival program hosts an eclectic array of contemporary performances by Los Angeles-based artists, presented in dialogue with works by guest artists from outside the city’s limits. The 2018 LAX Festival is built on an exchange with artists, curators, and organizations in Philadelphia. Festival passes are $125, individual tickets for performances and events are $20.     The Exchange

    Beginning with last year’s 5th anniversary edition, Los Angeles Performance Practice focuses each festival on an exchange platform with a specific city, thereby engaging artists, curators and organizations in performance presentations, dialogues and artist-to-artist interactions that are designed to cultivate mutual inquiry and long-term network development.

    Set within a series of imagined backdrops, Cowboy creates a universe where their personally wrought personifications of dance and theater confront one another. Theater’s Blue Clown and dance’s Green Witch actively struggle to reflect, oppose, subsume and dominate each other. Their expansive play within real and imagined realms of hybridity serves to reveal the multifaceted nature of the relationship between theater and dance.

    I’m Very Into You
    Sara Lyons

    In 1995, the late, great feminist author Kathy Acker launched a heady, sexy email correspondence with media theorist McKenzie “Ken” Wark, following a steamy encounter. Director Sara Lyons gathers a local cast of feminist, queer and non-binary underground artists who embody this feverish exchange and examine the evolution of intimacy over the last two decades—via the internet, and through expanding queer expression.

    Call It a Day

    This day-long durational performance originates from a real encounter between two couples who spent an afternoon together one snowy day in rural Illinois. One liberal, one conservative. One progressive, one traditional. One faithless, one faithful. Wohead’s recollected exchange—performed by Jessica Hanna, Mireya Lucio, Jesse Saler and Wohead—repeats on a continuous morphing loop, as it elicits a musical series of repetitions, transformations and ruptures.

    “This piece sounds like gamelan from Pluto—or maybe ’70s Philip Glass as interpreted by Harry Partch on his Cloud-Chamber Bowls.” – The Stranger


    Polytope a multimedia microtonal performance for MIDI quartet. Performed entirely in darkness, it is a mesmerizing dance of silhouettes of fingers over colorful glowing MIDI buttons, captured on live feed video and projected large and bright as a moving, visual score.

    The Undergird (SOLO)

    Meg Foley’s The undergird began as a solo about death and grief as bodily experiences, that expanded into a quintet to encompass the collective experience of loss. Now in its latest manifestation, Foley returns again to the solo form, with the residual influences of the people and processes the work has gathered across its life.

    Procession Relic

    Developed in collaboration with artist and composer Yann Novak, Procession Relic unfolds within an undulating atmosphere of sound and light. The work gathers a stellar ensemble of dancers—including Bruno, Alison D’Amato, Jordan Saenz and Flora Wiegmann—who utilize subtle constraints to draw attention to the body, the environment it inhabits, and the ways that each are perceived.

    Until, Until, Until…

    Edgar Arceneaux


    Renown visual artist Edgar Arceneaux’s first live work investigates the infamous 1981 performance given by Broadway legend Ben Vereen and televised nationally as part of Ronald Reagan’s inaugural celebration. Arceneaux’s mise-en-scene immerses the audience in the scenery of the presidential celebration, as it questions the truth of past narratives and creates an opportunity to reconsider our collective understanding of historic events.

    A collaboration between Jaamil Olawale Kosoko and Marica De Michele


    This film traces the creation of Kosoko’s 2015 work #negrophobia as it makes its debut in The Netherlands. It is a cinematic glimpse that attempts to make plain often-invisible systems of power, and explore how performance as an activist practice can help foreground and work through structural and systemic forms of violence and oppression, in particular as these relate to Black identities.

    Object of Her Affection

    This unconventional love story follows the emotional journey of one Andrea Lowe, a heroine whose sexuality reveals the way that objects quietly hold multiple personalities, and sometimes multiple hearts. From her first love—a baby’s blanket—to adolescent dalliances with a bad-boy hunting rifle, Object of Her Affection tackles Andrea’s romantic evolutions while exploring the synesthetic relationship between objects and humans.

    Susan Simpson’s work of live sci-fi puppet cinema tells the tale of a Southern California artist who finds herself evolving into a highly advanced alien other. Pursued as a biological terrorist, she must decide her next steps, and possibly transform the human race.

    Pandæmonium is a fever dream of the American West and a battle between the body and its image, the live and the mediated.     Part of the duo’s seven-year collaborative research into J-Sette performance, Intervention activates multiple historically Black neighborhoods as it uses rhythm and precision as vehicles into subversion and satisfaction. On sidewalks and in alleyways, they reveal the powerfully singular expression within this highly regimented dance.
